The Gospel in Creation

Nature is Disturbing

Whenever you search “nature” online you’ll find beauty—as you should. Nature is beautiful. But, there’s also something secretly disturbing about nature. It’s broken, corrupted, and decaying. Something is very wrong with this planet in many different ways. And this lines up perfectly with the Bible. When we sinned, Nature fell with us.

I focused on the beauty of Creation in blogs like “The Show: Creation From A Poet’s Eyes”, but this time I want to focus on how our sin has destroyed God’s masterpiece. Because of what we did, now Nature is disturbing.

Nature’s Disturbing Game

I love nature documentaries, but my wife hates them because of the hunt scenes.

It’s cool to watch lions chase down a beautiful gazelle. But there’s a reason why they don’t show the gazelle dying. There’s something about watching a lion shred that beautiful creature’s muscle out of their skin.

Something within us hurts as the prey falls to the ground and gives up. Its big beady eyes staring at the lion as if to ask “Why?” and “Please spare me.” But the lion doesn’t.

What about the spider that eats her mate right after mating? The raccoon eating the baby birds? Or some bears that eat their own cubs? Why do these hideous things happen?

It’s because all of Creation learned from us. We lie, cheat, and steal, and sometimes do all three on a daily basis. We are just like this lion taking from others so that we can have life.  This is what we brought into the world when man first rebelled against God. We broke the natural order of the universe and defied God’s decree.

Now, because of us, the gazelle dies a very slow and painful death.

The Death of Life

We’ve all heard of the circle of life, but this is a lie. Life is dying. The sun feeds the grass, the grass feed the herbivores, and the herbivores feed the carnivores, and the carnivores don’t feed anything. They just consume and die. Rather than a circle of life, we have a progression of life into death.

The only reason why we haven’t all died is because our source of life (the sun) is very slow at dying its self. But our sun is dying. It might take a long time, but the sun will fade away as will all others stars.

When we sinned, we broke the perfect balance. We severed our universe off from the true source of life: God. He was the king and he sustained everything. Nothing ran out. Nothing experienced the pain of unmet needs. But when we sinned against God, we cut our universe off from God, and so everything started dying.

This is called entropy.

Entropy is the scientific law exposing the truth of sin’s corrupting power. Fortunately, the fuse we lit to the destruction of our universe is very long. Praise God he designed our universe to survive so long without him.

Everything is dying. All we can do is delay the destruction one more generation at a time through reproduction, but even that hope would be cut off in a few days when our sun fails us.

The True Hope

Scientists are freaking out. Panic grows the more we realize we are destroying our planet through over-fishing, deforestation, global warming, and much more. Whether you believe any of this to be true or not, our planet is doomed regardless.

I think God knew this would happen from the very beginning.

Now, none of this should stop us from doing all we can to take care of our planet, but we have a hope that no one else does.

This planet is broken, and that’s why God is going to make a new one. Once we broke his creation, he developed a plan to restore what was lost. He’s going to make a new creation free of the decaying sin we brought in.

In this new world, there will be no death, no entropy, no lack, no want, no need, no pain. Unlike the disturbing nature we see, All of creation will be in harmony unlike how the nature we see is disturbing. Check out what Isaiah 11:6-8 says

The wolf shall live with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the kid, the calf and the lion and the fatling together, and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze, their young shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play over the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put its hand on the adder’s den.

Now that’s a world I want to be a part of. Don’t you?

The Problem

The only problem with this beautiful picture is you. God can’t let sin into this new creation or else it will end up just like this broken world.

Imagine if I came up to you and told you I had a flash drive with one hundred gigabytes of incredible nature pictures and videos, however, just half of a gigabyte on the flash drive is a virus. Would you let me plug that into your computer and download the content? Absolutely not.

Even if you have just a trace of evil in you (I’m sure we all have much more than that), how could God let us into this new creation, when our sin would taint and corrupt it?

He can’t let us in unless he does a total virus swipe on us to remove all our sins.

Well, he did do this, and that’s called Jesus.

Jesus died so he could take all of our sins upon himself. As a result, we can be completely cleansed of all of our sin if we repent and believe in him. This is the only way to enter this new creation with our wonderful God.

If you haven’t asked Jesus to do this for you already, what’s stopping you?

If you have asked Jesus to do this for you, what’s stopping you from sharing this with others? This world is dying and everyone who hasn’t yet trusted in Christ is going to die on this world and never enter the new creation unless we tell them what Jesus did.

Let’s not just enjoy this planet, let’s recognize the sad truth behind why nature is disturbing and start rescuing the lost.

Let’s live wilder!

  1. Very nice post, Philip!
The things about nature I find disturbing is tornadoes and hurricanes. Also, other natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis, and typhoons.
They many times destroy families and cities. Especially in third world countries and islands.

    1. Amen! So true Abby! How crazy is it that things as gentle as wind and rain can destroy entire cities. This world is definitely fallen.
