We might read the incredible stories in the Bible of the Apostles or of Moses and think, “If only God still moved like that.” I firmly believe that the Christian life shouldn’t be boring. If you are a Christian and your life is boring, then something’s wrong.
I don’t say this because I want you to feel guilty for doing something wrong, but because there’s so much more out there for you, and I don’t want you to miss out. I want you to live the adventurous life I believe God has planned for you.
Core Elements of Boredom
What causes life to be boring? If we can dissect this, then we can get down to the problem.
Several things can make life boring, like unending routines and normalcy, but I don’t believe either of these are the chief culprits. I believe life will quickly become mundane when we orchestrate things around selfishness, safety, and comfort.
Let’s start with comfort. First of all, God never calls us to a comfortable life. Sure, some people in the Bible might’ve had comfortable lives in the material sense, but not in others. It is okay to go through seasons of comfort, but if we make all our decisions based on comfort, we won’t take the steps of faith God calls us to.
Safety. Oh, we as Americans love this word. Don’t get me wrong, safety is a great idea, but we can (and do) take this too far. It’s so easy for us to make safety our God. In addition to asking God what he wants us to do, we slap on a filter to all that he might say and cut out anything that has a degree of risk. We can’t give all our money away, what if we need it? Nor can we move to that country because dangerous things happen there.
Is this the mentality David had when he slew Goliath? Or what about Jesus when he let the Jews crucify him?
Selfishness. We all have our dreams and desires. Sometimes God doesn’t seem to care about them quite as much as we do. So, what do we do if God asks us to give up the life we’ve always wanted? What if instead of watching that movie we’ve waited for, we instead helped a friend move?
How Can We Make Life More Exciting?
I’m not perfect at this myself. Just like everyone else, I can desire safety or comfort more than God’s will, and I too am selfish. However, even someone as messed up as I am can recognize simple logic.
Here’s a fact, when we have nothing to do, we are bored. When we have nothing exciting or meaningful to do we get bored. But God didn’t call us to do nothing. Christ gave us the most meaningful and incredible mission right before he ascended into heaven. He said, “Go throughout all the world and make disciples.”
Now, you might’ve heard this great commission a few dozen times, so let me unpack it. Jesus is essentially saying, “people all around the world are enslaved to Satan and will die, not just in this life, but in eternity also. But, come and follow me, together we can rescue them out of my sworn enemy’s hands.”
Doesn’t that sound exciting? So, why aren’t our lives exciting?
The True Christian Life Shouldn’t be Boring
Sure, God might call you to be a professional athlete, or call you to some crazy missions project. But even if he calls you to live right where you are, he doesn’t call you to a boring life.
Wouldn’t life be exciting if we lived in such a way where we are always ready to move at a moment’s notice wherever God is calling us to go. If we wake up each morning and think, “God who are you going to bring me in contact with today to share this incredible message with?” And if every day we contemplate selling everything and giving it where God might ask us to give.
How could life be boring if we held everything out in total surrender to God. This isn’t safe, comfortable, or selfish, but it is exciting. It’s this sort of life that forces us to be absolutely dependent on God. And when we are trusting in him for everything, no day is like another, and every day will be filled with praise for how God provided.
Everyone can do this, it just requires faith and obedience, because the moment God speaks, Satan is sure to come running and divert us from God’s plan however he possibly can.
I’m not saying you must move, or sell everything, but we must be willing to, and we must be sharing the gospel with the lost. This is how we live wilder.
