3 Areas to Test If You Really Trust God

Do you really trust God? I mean, do you really, really trust God? It’s so easy to answer yes to this question, but if we are being honest I think we’d hesitate to answer. In this blog, I want to cover a few areas that we all probably struggle to trust God with. My hope is not to make you feel bad about how little trust you have in God, but to expose a weakness so you can grow stronger in your faith and draw closer to God.

Do You Trust God With Your Time?

This might seem an easy thing to trust God with, but let’s look deeper at it. Whether you are a student or a worker out in the workforce, the question is the same, how much time do you give God each day? Do you pray and read your bible daily? If not, ask why?

Is it because you just don’t care? Or are you too busy?

If you don’t care, then I’d really encourage you to read my short story Dear Soldier, Do You Remember?

If it’s because you are too busy, then I can relate. There’s so much to do every day, how can we possibly add one more thing onto our schedule?

Worry is always a tell-tale sign that you aren’t trusting God in a certain area.

This is where trust comes in. Can you trust that by spending more time with God each day that he will take care of you and help you finish everything that needs to get done?

When asked about what his plan was for the day, Martin Luther said “Work, work from early until late. In fact, I have so much to do that I shall spend the first three hours in prayer.”

Additionally, God tells us to rest on the sabbath day. Though I don’t personally think we need to rest on the literal sabbath day (Saturday). I do believe God has good reasons why he asks us to set aside one day to rest. I know from my college days that it’s really hard to take a whole day off and rest. Still though, when I did trust God and rest for a whole day, I never seemed to fall behind.

Can’t we trust that as we follow God into what he calls us to do that he’d work things out to provide for us? So ask yourself again, do you trust God with your time?

Do You Trust God With Your Singleness?

Oh trust me, I’ve walked through every single season in the book. Praise God I’m married now, but I spent a solid twenty-five years without a single girlfriend wondering if I’d ever find someone. My younger self seems silly and overdramatic now as I look back on my old worried journal entries about finding someone.

Worry is always a tell-tale sign that you aren’t trusting God in a certain area.

God wants what is best for us, and sometimes that means waiting to be married or not getting married. We can trust God and not fret over who or when or if we will get married. Do You Trust God With Your Money?

Ask yourself this: Which provides for you? Money, or God? Which provides your food? Your housing? On face value, it’s easy to answer “God”. But I don’t think this is a very honest answer for most of us.

Let’s dig a bit deeper to show the truth of where our hearts are. Would you feel more at ease working and getting paid a weekly salary to pay your expenses or leaving your job behind to dedicate 100% of your time to volunteering and trusting that God will provide for your needs?

I’m sure we are all much more at ease in the first example. This shows our lack of trust in God.

If you depend on money to provide for you, then of course the second option is scary. However, if we all truly trusted that God was our sole provider—who often uses money as his means of provision—, then both of these options are identical.

If we are following God into a job and trusting that he’ll provide for us through that job, then we can trust he’ll provide for us in a more abstract way as we follow him into volunteering.

I’m not saying that if you feel uncomfortable with this second option then you aren’t a good Christian. Honestly, I think we are all uncomfortable with that second option to some degree. We’ve all grown so accustomed to depending on our bank account. But, this doesn’t mean we can’t learn to trust God more to provide.

How do we do this?

Giving is always a good option. I’ve discovered that even when I’ve given sacrificially I haven’t had to worry about meeting pressing needs.

Another good way to grow in this is to pray. Whenever you catch yourself worrying in some way about your finances, pray and remind yourself not to make decisions based solely on money.

Trust God

I don’t want you walking away from this blog thinking you are a terrible Christian. My hope is that this blog helped you see how much more room we all have to grow. Beautiful things happen when we trust God.

Now with all these new areas brought to light, I hope we all can start taking wild steps of faith to step out on a grand adventure with God.

I hope this blog post helps you to live wilder.
