There have been a lot of wars that were good to fight and a lot of terrible wars to fight. However, no good soldier should ever walk into the battle and kill with a completely clear conscious. Some deranged soldiers love killing, but a good soldier should always be bothered by war. No many how evil your enemy is, killing is still killing. Because of this, I believe there is and will ever be only one truly noble war. And only this war can truly satisfy our desire for adventure.
The True Enemy
We as people should all agree that we should protect other people. In every other war, we have to kill people to protect people. Yes, it may be necessary in some cases, but what if there was a war that always fought to protect and help people. What if there was a war that instead of killing evil people, it transformed evil people into good people? Fortunately, this war does exist.
This is the war against evil.
Everyone is evil. I’m evil, you are evil. The difference is the degree of evilness within us. This is what separates us from Hitler. This war fights to rid ourselves of evil, and rid others of their cancerous evil as well.
If you take a step back, you can begin to see that there is evil attacking our world. On the other side there’s also a good side fighting back. In between both of these forces, we find people. People are interesting. We seem to float back and forth between these two sides depending on our mood or season of life. This battle we also find within us. I’m sure you’ve had those moments when you knew what was right and wrong and you couldn’t decide between them. Selfishly you wanted to do what was wrong, but your conscious told you it wasn’t worth the cost.
God Vs. Satan
This war is ultimately between God and Satan, between angels and demons, and between people and people. Now, obviously God could win with the snap of his finger, but the problem is that if he destroyed evil (as he will do one day), he’d also have to destroy us. Satan had us within his grasp because we choose to side with him every time we decide we don’t need God’s help, or our way is better than God’s, or if we simply don’t want to be with God.
The fact is, rejecting the true king of the universe is rebellion in the heart. That means we are aligning with Satan in his efforts to separate us from God’s love. And we were trapped. We all have sinned against God, and the punishment for treason against his throne is death. As much as people fought to do enough good to cover over their treason, it was never enough. We were sealed in Satan’s fate. We could never escape on our own.
That’s why God came as Jesus. By setting up a system so that we could use the free will God gave us to align ourselves back to God simply through a personal decision, God did all the good works for us through Jesus. All we had to do is admit our treasonous sins, ask God to forgive us, accept Jesus’ death on the cross as a substitute for what we deserve, and ask God to come into our lives.
Welcome to The Noble War
This is where things get cool. With God living within us, we are free from Satan’s grasp. We become like cosmic superheroes! Now we have the strength and power through God alone to fight back Satan and his demons. By fighting this noble war, we can help free others from Satan’s grasp.
This is the greatest war to be waged. We can fight with absolute resolve that everything we are doing is good because our chief weapon is love. Our armor is our holy lives, which keep the enemy from attacking us since every area of our lives are centered on serving God and loving others in purity. If our armor is strong, Satan can’t even touch us and we can wreak havoc on the evil around us.
This is a war worth fighting. How cool is it that we get to see others leave behind lives of hate, pain, confusion, and despair? In place of all that muck, we get to help them come alive through God’s love, peace, and joy.
