The Adventurous Life

Find Your Core Anchor

Just look at every hero there is out there. They all reach a hard season and they always seem to overcome it. But, how do they overcome it? Some need to remember who they are and others remember who they are fighting for. In all cases, people go back to their core anchor to find their strength to persevere. What is your core anchor?

Find a Good Core Anchor

Here’s the deal, you can have several anchors, but in the end you already have one deep anchor that holds you more than all the others combined. This is the anchor that will either give you the most strength if it holds firm or ruin you if you lose it. The problem is that most of us have poor anchors.

There are lots of things we can use as anchors. Maybe your source of motivation comes through a dream you have? Maybe it’s someone you care about? Whatever it is, you need something you care more about than anything else. This is the thing you absolutely cannot lose. It’s the thing that will ruin you if you lose it. If it will ruin you, you better make sure it’s a firm anchor.

Having a person as an anchor is great, but a person shouldn’t be your core anchor. People die. That, unfortunately, is a fact. On top of this, people change. Your older brother might not always be a good role model. He might slip up or journey down a bad path. People change. The same is also true with dreams and goals. Once you achieve that goal the rest of your life will be directionless. Again, this can make a good anchor, but it wont sustain you as your core anchor. You need to find an unbreakable anchor.

Find Your Core Anchor in God

Trust me, I’ve searched long and hard out of stubbornness to find a better anchor, but God is the only thing that suffices as your core anchor. The beautiful thing is, you can’t lose him. He will always be a firm anchor. You can always draw strength from him to press on. He’s always with you, and he will never turn his back on you. Everything else can and will fail you at one point or another.

This means you need to know who God is. He can’t be your anchor if you don’t know him. Read his word the Bible to see all the amazing thing’s he’s done in thousands of people’s lives before you. Read what he says about himself and you’ll quickly realize why I set him as my core anchor and why millions of others do around the planet. He’s an amazing God and he keeps his promises if you seek to honor him.

Yes, you need to know who he is, but you also need to find your identity in him. This is naturally what we do with our anchors. Who we believe we are is what our anchors tell us. For example, if your anchor is your dad, your perception of yourself will match his to some degree. If your anchor is soccer, your ability to play soccer will directly parallel your self-image.

Here’s the great news, God’s opinion of you is miles higher than anyone else’s. God looks at you and values you so much that he’s willing to come to earth and face torment, torture, death, and even rise again so that you could be reunited with him if you ask Jesus to save you from your sins, and ask him be the anchor of your life. He values your life that much that he’d do this all for you. Now, that’s a good God.

No Limits

With this core anchor, nothing can stop you as you follow God. You will prevail through situations you never thought possible. You will achieve more than you could ever dream. All this of course can only be done in God’s strength. You must find your core anchor in him and in him alone. I promise you, it’s worth it. You may be able to go a long ways without him, but he’ll take you much further. It’s also far more rewarding having him lead you because he knows what you desire, and he longs to fulfill your desires if you let him lead you.
