If you are like I was (and sometimes still am), fear is a big element of your life. It keeps you from doing the things you want, saying the things you want to say, and talking to the people you want to talk to. I hate living that way, and I’m guessing you do too. So, why do we keep letting fear control us? And, how do we get past it? Fear will always be a part of our lives, but you can get to a life beyond fear’s control. I’ve managed to do it despite many failures, and I want to help you do the same.
Let me tell you a personal story
I was terrified of roller coasters, water slides, and all the other fun rides. For years, my family would go to amusement parks and separate into two groups. My older brothers would go ride the huge rollercoasters, while I would lead my younger sisters to the kiddie park.
I loved the kiddie park. Nice easy rides that were just enough to give you that little thrilling experience without ever going more than 10mph or climb over 6 feet above the ground. It was easy, comfortable, and safe.
In Denver there’s a ride called the Tower of Doom. This torture device lifts you over a hundred feet into the sky only to drop you without warning. What kind of lunatic would willing chose to ride such a thing? Answer: my two younger sisters
The universal number one rule of being a big brother states that “you can never let your younger sisters think they are more brave than you.” So, when my sisters decided one year that they wanted to ride the Tower of Doom, I had to put on my unused mask of bravery.
I was terrified.
We waited in line for an hour before we could enter hell. Once I was locked into my seat and we started climbing, I felt numb. When we dropped, my stomach leapt out of my mouth and dissipated into the air through a high-pitched scream. But, I survived.
Despite all of the fictitious odds I ran through my mind. Despite my disbelief in the ride-worker’s promises. I survived. But, something much bigger happened within me the moment I stepped out of the Tower of Doom.
Somehow, by conquering the most terrifying ride at the park, I had defeated the power of my fear. The whole rest of the day I rode the biggest and scariest rides at the park. And, I loved it. I felt like I had just slain a dragon, discovered a new planet, and invented teleportation all at the same time. I was free.
Life Beyond Fear
Fear no longer held me back. Yes, I was still afraid. And as you will discover, you will never be free of fear. However, you can live a life beyond fear, where it no longer holds you back.
And that’s what I want for you. Your life may be easy, comfortable, and safe, but you know just as well as I did that you are imprisoned. You want to experience freedom and life, but that fear is holding you back.
I want to help you. I want to help you face that fear and overcome it just as I did, and still must do, in order to be free. There is a life out there full of adventure, meaning, and freedom. Join with me as we face our fears and fight for that freedom.
What about you, how has fear imprisoned you?
